The Death of Khan Abdul Wali Khan, a great Pakhtun patriot |
|
| |
This article is based upon entries from a personal diary maintained by me. The article argues that Wali Khan was very far sighted; what he said in 1983 about the governance of Pakistan is even true today. In a sense we have not moved at all. More

Provoking Islam – Is it a conspiracy? Part II |
|
| |
After posting the original news letter, "Provoking Islam – Is it a conspiracy"? I have received interesting replies and one of these referred me to an article by Mr. Amir Taheri, appearing in The Opinion Journal on 8/2/06. Since Mr. Amir Taheri has raised important issues, some of them contrary to what I said, therefore in all fairness, I am taking this oppurtunity to post Mr. Taheri's complete views. My comment on Mr. Amir Taheri's article sent to the Opinion Journal, is also posted below for readers to make their judgment.
In part III, I intend to respond to another type of reaction, which has been received by me from overseas and friends belonging to other denominations. This will be more in the nature of a personal response.
Postscript: After I posted the above exchange on the net, I was made aware that the editor of the controversial Danish newspaper, "Jyllands-Posten", had earlier refused to publish comical (cartoons?) about Jesus Christ, on the grounds that it will harm the feelings of its Christian readers. It is reproduced below for the readers to draw their own conclusion. We are surely witnessing double standards. Now one can conclude with a degree of certainity, that the Prophets (PBUH) cartoons are meant to be provocative by design and not accident; plenty of reason for legislation. More

Provoking Islam - is it a conspiracy? The Law in Denmark & Norway Part III |
|
| |
A reader has sent his penetrating comments emanating from Part II of the article. Because of their importance, they are being reproduced below for readers, who are invited to form their own view. If the law forbids the Danes and the Norwegians from making fun of another person's religious beliefs then why is it not being enforced against the author and the publishers of the cartoons? This is not freedom but chaos. More

Mass hysteria over cartoons |

Agitation, exploitation & external threats |
|
| |
This newsletter looks at some of the social issues, which underlie the discontent in NWFP; it examines the deteriorating circumstances of the poor by the hi-jacking of policy. We also look at two case studies showing the deepening crisis in the regulatory structure in NWFP. The visit of Mr. Karzai is examined briefly in the context of the Pak-Afghan relationship. More

Karzai’s complaint |
|
| |
Karzai’s request for the arrest and extradition of Taliban by Pakistan is another way of accusing us for supporting them. It is the fore runner of things to come. The news letter fears the rise of violence in the Pashtun belt of Pakistan and Afghanistan next summer. It projects that US policy will sponsor Pashtun identity as a counter to the Islamists; the ethnic consequences of such a move will have repercussions. The news letter recommends respecting Karzai’s request and starting a joint criminal investigation into the matter. It argues for more job creation to curb violence in NWFP and tribal areas. More

Pakistan’s relations with Central Asian states in the perspective of energy depletion, economic & population growth & terrorism |
|
| |
The linked presentation was made to the Pakistan Administrative Staff College, Lahore on the 3rd of March 2006.
These 23 Power Point slides provide useful data from the briefing which is shared with visitors to the site. It highlights the need for Pakistan to focus on the dwindling reserves of fossil fuels in the context of rising population, rapid economic growth and terrorism; the later generated by the dictatorial states of Central Asia and by Russia in Chechnya; many of the fleeing refugees are those who found death in Afghanistan and Waziristan. Policy makers need to focus on these critical issues, if we are interested in a secure future for Pakistan and our neighbors.

Operations in Waziristan |
|
| |
The newsletter sees troubled times for Pakistan in Waziristan. It is fearful that if President Musharraf is right that the Indian army is operating in Afghanistan, then it is dangerous for our vital interests. It means that a strategic alliance between the US and India is in place. It implies likely trouble in Waziristan and Baluchistan in the future. Given the feelings between India and Pakistan, Indian army deployment shows insensitivity.
Failure to reduce violence in Waziristan may lead to US operations inside Pakistani territory. Civil society will be well advised to provide succor to the victims of Waziristan and Baluchistan. Pakistan’s hemorrhage must stop.
